NNPC, Total to consider lifting oil through rail By Kingsley Jeremiah | 28 October 2016 | 4:58 am

Image
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Total Nigeria Plc are considering the movement of petroleum products through the rail system in other to reduce the cost of transportation. This, they believed, is possible if plans by government to overhaul the rail sector becomes realistic. Speaking at the Oil Trading and Logistics Africa (Downstream) on Wednesday in Lagos, representatives of the two oil firms said the option remained viable to address some key challenges in the downstream sector and boost return on investment. General Manager, NNPC Retail Limited, Finance and Account, Jumah Dansure, said the organisation is considering moving petroleum products through rail to free up the nation’s road network and mitigates challenges in the value-chain. Dansure, who re-established the organisation’s commitment to standard and quality, also said the firm would tap into the recently launched speed limiter policy of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to deal with over spee...

Liverpool, Arsenal through in League Cup ON October 26, 2016 1:36 PM

Daniel Sturridge served a reminder of his worth to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp with both goals in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in England’s League Cup on Tuesday. Sturridge has started three of Liverpool’s last four Premier League games on the bench, but he seized his chance at Anfield to send last season’s beaten finalists into the quarter-finals. Arsenal also progressed, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Reading, while Hull City won 2-1 at second-tier Bristol City. “Overall summary, it was a deserved win,” Liverpool manager Klopp told Sky Sports. “Big number of chances and a wonderful goalkeeper from Tottenham (Michel Vorm). All good. I think it was entertaining. “He (Sturridge) did what he has to do and it was brilliant. He could have scored three or maybe four, but it was really good. That’s his big strength and he showed it again.” Klopp and Spurs counterpart Mauricio Pochettino between them made 21 changes to their starting line-ups, with vi...

Messi , Ronaldo Lead Ballon D’Or List

Image
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to resume their annual battle for the Ballon d’Or after both were named in the list of 30 nominees for the 2016 award on Monday. France Football, the magazine that founded most prestigious individual honour in football, released the list in which Real Madrid man Ronaldo, 31, and Barcelona’s Messi, 29, both featured. The pair have finished first and second in each of the past five years with Messi edging out his great rival three wins to two, including his triumph last year. Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi again shone as Barca won the 2015-16 La Liga title, but the Argentina international could be upstaged this year by Ronaldo, who is favoured to claim the prize for a fourth time. Though the Madrid man has struggled by his own stratospheric standards in the early stages of the current campaign, it is unlikely to overshadow the fact he contributed significantly as he picked up both the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid and Euro 2016 w...

Iheanacho Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches beat United’s Marcus Rashford to the title, with his teammate in Germany Kingsley Coman in third place. Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma also featured in the top ten. Despite opting to bring in Ilkay Gundogan to the club this summer instead of pursuing Sanches, Pep Guardiola rates the Bayern Munich star highly. “He is one of the best young players in Europe,” he said back in April as his Bayern side came up against Benfica in the Champions League. “It is not easy for anyone, at the age of 18, to be playing...

NFF tasks Rohr to improve on Eagles ON October 24, 2016 6:20 AM

Image
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has demanded a technically improved Super Eagles from the technical adviser, Gernort Rohr, ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier match against Algeria on November 12. Apparently not satisfied with the technical depth of the Super Eagles in the 2-1 win against the Chipolopolo of Zambia in their Group B qualifier game in Ndola, the NFF technical committee, has tasked Rohr to work on the weak departments which were glaring during the match at Ndola. A member of the committee said that the Franco- German coach was told in clear terms to juggle the team to give Nigeria a formidable squad capable of beating Algeria convincingly in Uyo, to maintain the country’s lead on the group table. “We are very glad we won the match against Zambia. It is a morale booster. The players’ confidence is high, but there is still a lot of work to do in the team. We should not be carried away by the three points. Our target is to win all our matches and drop no point ...

Victor Moses in action as Chelsea whip Mourinho’s Manchester United October 23, 2016 Tunde Eludini

Nigeria international, Victor Moses, was in action for 90 minutes as Chelsea Football Club humiliated their former coach, Jose Mourinho; beating Manchester United 4-0 on Sunday. Moses before Sunday’s game had taken a swipe at the Portuguese gaffer who never gave him a chance to blossom at the London club. Though he was not on target, the Nigerian forward now turned wing-back will be glad how his teammates turned on style to secure the emphatic win which has now taken them to fourth spot on the log. Chelsea had the dream start in Sunday’s game as Pedro scored in the first minute. In the 21 st minute, Garry Cahill added a second for the Blues as they took a 2-0 lead by the end of the first half. Chelsea scored two goals again in the second half, this time Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante hitting the back of the net. While Moses was in action, his compatriot Mikel Obi was conspicuously missing.

Ozil has taste for goals, Wenger declares

He showed me how to score a hat-trick, says Walcott Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Mesut Ozil has a “taste for goals” after the playmaker scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Ludogorets in the Champions League. Mesut Ozil scored a hat-trick after stunning goals from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott as Arsenal dismantled Ludogorets Razgrad in a ruthless Champions League display. Wenger said: “Let’s not be too quick on the verdict. We have a strong squad and a strong spirit, but you have to take care of it and keep your feet on the ground.” “In this game a lot is linked with confidence. I feel that at the moment because we win game after game, maybe we get through dodgy periods with less psychological damage. “The only way to win something big is to focus on the next one and work on humility.”The Gunners have won seven games in a row in all competitions – scoring 23 goals – and are unbeaten in 11 matches. Their last defeat was at home to Liverpool on the opening day of the Pre...

UEFA Champions League final may be played outside Europe By Ifreke Inyang on October 21, 2016

New president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, has admitted that the Champions League final may be played outside Europe in the future. UEFA has until now, been awarding the honour of staging its showpiece finals without any tendering process. But it appears the rights will be up for grabs.“It might be an idea, but we have to speak about it,” Ceferin told Associated Press. “To go from Portugal to Azerbaijan for example is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. “It’s a European competition so let’s think about it.” Ceferin also insisted that the usual 19.45 BST kick-off times will not be changed, even if it benefits large markets such as China.

I never asked NFF to pay Super Eagles in dollars – Mikel Obi By Ifreke Inyang on October 21, 2016

This week, some reports stated that a top Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) source, revealed that the Chelsea midfielder asked for the squad to be rewarded in foreign currency. Boko Haram has said it is ready to swap the girls for some of their members in detention across the country. Chelsea vs Leicester: Claudio Ranieri makes Champions League focus clear after Stamford Bridge thrashing

Claudio Ranieri has history with the Champions League of course. The Italian knows what it takes to go deep into the tournament having led Chelsea to the semi-finals in 2004 before making mistakes in the defeat by Monaco. The Leicester manager has been around long enough to also know that the further a club goes, the more the money pours in. The trick is balancing European football with the demands of the high-intensity Premier League. But it’s not a trick Ranieri – nor his team – is mastering right now with the club sitting in 13th position with just eight points. His players seem unable to switch between the two tournaments – they have won both Champions League group games and are top of the table. But is Ranieri sending out the right signals by leaving key players on the bench for league matches? Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness, who knows a bit about juggling European and league football, thinks not. And there was no hiding where the priority was on Saturday at Stamford Bridge...

Sport › Football › European Steve Madeley at the King Power Stadium | 6 hours ago |  0 comments Leicester vs Copenhagen match report: Riyad Mahrez maintains Foxes' 100% Champions League record

The latest unlikely Leicester City adventure seems certain to be extended after Riyad Mahrez maintained their glorious start to Champions League life. The Algerian’s goal before half-time settled a tense, closely-fought encounter with FC Copenhagen to leave Claudio Ranieri’s men on the brink of a place in the second round and knockout football in the European Cup. That the Premier League champions should be so close to hitting their target just halfway through their first ever group campaign is the latest minor miracle in the current fairytale capital of European football.

Nigerian soldiers withdraw from border town after Boko Haram attack

Nigerian Army troops stationed at a border town in Borno State have withdrawn from their location after a Boko Haram attack on Monday evening, the army spokesman said in a statement. Monday’s attack on Gashigar, on the border with Niger left thirteen soldiers wounded and an unknown number missing. Army spokesman Col. Usman said an operation was in progress to find the missing troops and “clear the Boko Haram terrorists at the general area.”

Recession to worsen Nigeria’s rising debt burden

Barely two weeks after meeting with top government officials, Fitch Ratings has passed a negative verdict on the economy, saying that its weak state will worsen Nigeria’s debt profile. The projection, which means that the end to the lingering economic challenge is not in the near term, also raises risk alert to potential investors against the country’s quest to attract foreign investments. Fitch, noting that Nigeria’s 2016 budget envisaged an increase in capital expenditure to stimulate the economy, recalled that disbursement was delayed by the late adoption of the plans and now the challenges of securing external financing. But notwithstanding the hope of securing financing from multilateral development banks and bilateral sources, the timing remains unsure and disbursements are unlikely until 2017. “We think the debt burden is sustainable, but it is increasing, while government revenues have fallen as a proportion of GDP,” the agency said. Already, the general government debt a...

Rohr To Drop NPFL Stars For Algeria Showdown By Salifu Usman — Oct 19, 2016 5:26 am | Leave a

Except for a last-minute change of mind, there are strong indications that Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, would drop players from Nigeria’s domestic league as preparations get into top-gear for next month’s all-important World Cup qualifier against the Fennecs of Algeria. Five players from the domestic scene were part of the Super Eagles’ final squad that defeated Zambia 2-1 in Ndola, Zambia last week. Source closed to the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) revealed that the Franco-German tactician was contemplating leaving out all home-based players, as a result of their match rustiness, since the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season has ended. “The players from the domestic league will be left out of the Algeria match, because the season is over and the coach cannot vouch for their fitness. “He would rather use the positions taken by these players from the league to try out some other professionals in still-active leagues overseas,” said...

Eden Hazard questions Chelsea role under Antonio Conte

Chelsea ace Eden Hazard has revealed his frustration at not being played as a No .10 by Antonio Conte like he is when featuring for Belgium. The 25 -year -old has made nine appearances in all competitions so far this season for Chelsea, scoring twice and providing one assist thus far . It follows on from a disappointing campaign for him last year , but there were positive signs towards the end of the season and during Euro 2016 that he was getting back to his top form. However , while it has dipped again this year , his latest comments will do little to ease any fears that Chelsea supporters may have over the Belgian international , as he doesn ’t sound best pleased with not having the chance to play through the middle at Stamford Bridge. “ I like to play as a No 10 ,” he said , as reported by The Times . “ I think I have more freedom offensively . Belgium have full backs who run hard and create a lot of space with the national team , which is good and I like to play there.

Premier League match report: Arsenal 3-2 Swansea

Bob Bradley's first game as Swansea manager ended in defeat as his side were narrowly beaten by 10-man Arsenal in an entertaining clash at the Emirates Stadium. The Swans had won here on their previous two visits and had not lost away to Arsenal in over five years but, despite threatening a comeback, they succumbed to a 3-2 loss that sent the Gunners level with Manchester City at the top of the table. Theo Walcott was all-but gifted a brace to put Arsenal in charge but Granit Xhaka, who would later be sent off by referee Jon Moss, handed possession to Gylfi Sigurdsson to bring Bradley's side back into the game. Birthday boy Mesut Ozil restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a well-taken volley but a first Swansea goal for record-signing Borja Baston kept things nervy for the Gunners, who played with 10 men for the final 20 minutes after Xhaka was shown a straight red card for bringing down the impressive Modou Barrow.  Arsenal were soon on top and took the lead as ...

EPL preview: Mikel battles Musa as Iwobi, Iheanacho set to take scoring form to clubs

The English Premier League resumes today after the International break and our attacking duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi would love to take their scoring boots from the National team to their club sides as both youngsters were on target for the Super Eagles in the World Cup qualifier against Zambia. For Iheanacho and his Manchester City side, they will host Everton as they try to quickly recover from their first loss of the season which they suffered against Tottenham on match-week 7. The Citizens have had an unusual dry run, picking up just one point from their last two games in all competitions after starting the season with nine straight wins. Pep Guardiola will be slightly worried about Sergio Aguero’s form as the striker has gone four games for club and country without scoring, while the Spaniard will also be sweating on the fitness of talisman Kevin De Bruyne, who has been out of action since the 24th of September. England's talent pool is diminishing at an alarming rate and an all star Premier League XI proves it

As the nation breathes a sigh of relief over the return of the Premier League this weekend following ten days of international football, Gareth Southgate will begin to experience the headache that has troubled every England manager since the turn of the century. The Premier League may quite rightly sell itself as the most exciting and unpredictable league in the world, but for Southgate, it is football’s version of ever decreasing circles. As the 46-year-old interim manager explained followed Tuesday’s 0-0 draw against Slovenia in Ljubljana, the pool of players available to England has now diminished at such an alarming rate that the squad he named for the recent World Cup qualifiers is pretty much it – there is no crop of alternative talent waiting to harvested. “I’m not sure how many players out there who are playing in the league,” Southgate said. “Whoever picks the squad – everybody would pick something slightly different – I bet 19 or 20 names would be the same, maybe more. “...

Manchester City vs Everton: Pep Guardiola compares John Stones to Ronald Koeman

John Stones has the defensive qualities to become England’s long-term answer to Ronald Koeman, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. Stones’ willingness to play out from the back has made him a key part of the Premier League leaders’ team since arriving from Everton for £47.5million in August. On Saturday, he faces a first meeting with his former club, managed by Koeman, who was a playing colleague and room-mate of Guardiola at Barcelona during the first half of the 1990s. Guardiola has spoken of his admiration for Koeman, who played at the Nou Camp between 1989 and 1995, describing the former Holland captain as “one of the best central defenders I ever met”, and sees Stones as a similar type of player. “They’re quite similar in the sense that they both like to play the ball,” Guardiola said. “Normally, a central defender is a big guy who plays with the head, marks man-to-man and is strong in the air.
